New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) debuted their first short film in the “Immigrant Women: Sharing Our Voices Through Film” series on Friday, February 27 at Maspeth Town Hall.

The series focuses on the struggles and daily lives of immigrant women living in New York City. There is a theme of activism throughout each film, allowing the voices of the city’s diverse communities to be heard. It also showcases the work of first-generation female filmmakers.

“I feel like the filmmakers did a really great job at capturing the essence of these women, whether it’s the work that they do or the kind of struggles that they are experiencing, such as trying to keep their cultures alive or trying to work through some past issues like domestic violence,” Elizabeth Estrada, the series’ project manager, said.

The upcoming films will be distributed among neighborhoods like Ridgewood, Glendale and Middle Village. Dates are to be announced. Following each film will be a Q&A session with the filmmakers.
