Family fights for son’s killer to remain behind bars

George Gibbons, the former owner of The Gibbons Home in Maspeth, was killed in 2011 after a drunk driver struck a cab carrying him home. Now, Gibbons’ family is fighting to make sure his killer is not released on parole.

On the night of the accident, Peter Rodriguez drove his girlfriend’s vehicle the wrong way down a LI Expressway service road. He ultimately crashed into the cab and fled the scene on foot. It took a month for the police to track Rodriguez down in Connecticut.

Rodriguez pled guilty to criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half to seven years in prison, but he’s already available for parole.

Rodriguez’s hearing will take place on March 23. Gibbons’ family is seeking the community’s help in submitting as many letters as possible asking that Rodriguez serve his full sentence.

Letters can be submitted online at https://www.parole.ny.gov/letters.html and must include Rodriguez’s inmate information (Name: Rodriguez, Peter, NYSID: 06879028H, DIN: 12A2553). The family also asks that a copy of each letter is sent to them at The Gibbons’ Home: 54-12 69th Street Maspeth, Queens NY 11378 or emailed to siobhanmgibbons@aol.com.
