The Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) NYC Green Infrastructure Program will proceed with action on Tuesday, October 13, when quite a number of properties around Newtown Creek will be marked as locations for bioswales installations.

Bioswales are green landscape elements intended to remove pollution from runoff water. The goal is to reduce the amount of sewer overflow entering the city’s bodies of water. The aesthetic of the bioswales is also designed to beautify the heavily industrialized area.

The installation of the bioswales have long been a discussion among Community Board 5 and the DEP.

Porousha Chomeili, a community liaison for EnTech engineering, the company installing the bioswales, approached members of Community Board 5 on Friday regarding the upcoming bioswales markings in the area. Community members will be provided with an advisory notice, door hangers and brochures about the changes.

The upgrades will be split into 2 phases. Phase 1 will attempt to eliminate pollution in the Newtown Creek area by adding right-of-way bioswales to roughly 200 various addresses. Phase 2 will continue to install 150 more right-of-way bioswales, but there will also be additional sidewalk and curb upgrades done where necessary.

Currently, the locations for the bioswales may be adjusted, so precise addresses have not been named.
