The debate over the possible conversion of 70th Street between 54th and 51st avenues into a one-way northbound has dragged on for two years, but may come to a conclusion soon.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) confirmed today that the conversion is taking place on Saturday, October 29.

Residents have gone back and forth on the proposal. Some have been outspoken in their opposition, citing a lack of notification from city officials. Others have said they don’t want the change because it would disrupt the traffic flow, even on other streets.

But proponents of the change say that the changes for the street, which is near IS 73, is for safety purposes. The two-way block has caused some headaches for car owners who have had their mirrors taken out.

Either way, it’s happening. What are your thoughts about the 70th Street conversion?

  1. I could’t be happier, all those in opposition should have been in my house the past few years. The inability to pull out of my driveway on a daily basis without getting hit, the endless honking at all hours day and night from people speeding just to meet an oncoming truck or car in opposite direction and many mirrors knocked off. Oh and having the kids have to cross st top of the hill instead of the corner like they are taught to. It’s been nothing but horrible for years, been woken up by honking and cursing for way to long, hoping I can make up for that lost time. I just hope the clowns that aren’t paying attention to the new change don’t hurt anyone while getting used to the change.
