Boy Scout’s project aids homeless families

BoyScout_blog1Kyle Campbell, a Boy Scout from Maspeth, is working on becoming an Eagle Scout through one substantial and noble idea. Campbell hopes to help homeless families in Queens by providing a local residence with supplies that families can benefit from.

The 15-year-old student from Garden School in Jackson Heights has teamed up with the Boulevard Family Residence at 7900 Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst for the project. And although he does not have much experience, Campbell is passionate about making a difference.

Once he found out that he had to do an Eagle Scout project, he called up the local shelter and scheduled a meeting with the director. Campbell was given a list of items in high demand for the families.

From there, his role was to enforce the help of the community by setting up locations around the area where donations could be dropped off. Accepted donations include diapers, baby formula, school supplies, toiletries, books, business attire suitable for interviews and recreational items.

“I think it’s important that everyone has something,” Campbell said. “It seems right to help the homeless shelter and the community, so I spoke to them and they were grateful for any help that they can get.”

In order for a Boy Scout to become an Eagle Scout, each teen must earn 21 merit badges and work on a special service project that is beneficial to any religious institution, school or community.

Campbell, who has been a Boy Scout for almost 10 years, understands that his project is ambitious. Besides a private drop-off location at his school in Jackson Heights, there has been only one business willing to help out. Maspeth Federal Savings Bank at 56-18 69th Street will take donations until May 30.

The Boulevard Family Residence, which was previously known as the Pan American hotel, was converted into an emergency homeless shelter last June and is currently home to about 200 families and 350 children.
“It’s important that people help those who have less than them,” Campbell added. “It’s something everyone should do.”

Please donate items from this list to help Campbell and the Boulevard Family Residence:

– Baby formula
– School supplies such as notebooks, pencils, pens
– Toiletries such as shampoo, soap, combs, deodorant
– Business attire suitable for interviews
– Books such as puzzle books, blank books for writing or books to read
