Owner of Fame Diner Passes Away

Maspeth business owner, Angelo Kantlis, has passed away at the age of 65.

Kanlis died on the evening of Feb. 12. He owned the popular Fame Diner on Grand Ave., where customers stopped by to offer their condolences to the man they’ve known for years.

Angelo ran the family business alongside his son Johnny. Johnny spoke of how the father of four and grandfather to 12 grandchildren loved his family, friends and the entire neighborhood.

“He was a pioneer and an icon in the community,” he said. “He was friends with everyone in the diner, everyone who worked here and all of the customers.”

Johnny described his father’s personality as charasmatic, caring and loving.

A wake will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lloyds Funeral Home, 214-43 39th Ave. in Bayside.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthrodox Church, 196-10 Northern Blvd., Flushing.

  3. I worked w/Angelo and his Family at the Fame Diner and their other Coffee Shop when I was 18 years old, along with my Mother (Peggy) Angelo was a very hard working and fair Man to work for. He will be greatly missed. Thoughts and Prayers to his Family.
