NYPD and State DOT plan Grand Avenue truck enforcement op

Starting at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, the 104th Precinct and New York State Department of Transportation will conduct a truck enforcement operation on Grand Avenue near Remsen Place, according to a representative of the precinct.

The move follows years of community complaints for issues related to commercial trucks using that Grand/Flushing Avenue corridor to avoid traffic on the Long Island Expressway.

After receiving support from Queens Community Board 5, local business owner Tony Nunziato introduced a plan for a Grand Avenue Truck Bypass to the Department of Transportation in 2005, and then-New York City DOT Commissioner Iris Weinshall approved the plan quickly.

The implementation of the bypass plan was less immediate, however, given the need to redesign the layout of the intersection of 58th Street with Maspeth and Maurice avenues in order to accommodate the truck traffic.

In March, 2011, CB5 and the DOT discussed the plan in detail, included several one-way conversions intended to smooth traffic flow through the five leg intersection of 56th Terrace and 58th Street with Maspeth and Maurice avenues.

The bypass was completed in 2012, but the problem of truck traffic on Grand Avenue persisted.

In June 2013, the COMET Civic hosted a rally to highlight the continued problem of heavy truck traffic on Grand Avenue. At the rally, community leaders called for traffic court judges to enforce summonses issued to truck drivers along the corridor, for the NYC DOT to update the truck route map on their website showing the Grand Avenue/Maspeth Bypass, for the provision of 104th Precinct with support units trained and equipped to conduct full-scale motor carrier enforcement on a regular basis. The civic also called for regular enforcement by the NYS DOT.
