Rash of home break-ins throughout Maspeth community

While it was reported last week that crime in the 104th Precinct is down 3.1 percent so far this year, police reported there was a rash of home burglaries starting on February 28.

On Monday, March 3, while a woman was in a home on Calamus Avenue, she heard loud noises outside of the two-story house at approximately 2:30 p.m.

When she went to examine the situation, police say she saw a light-skinned Asian male, approximately 5’5, 150 pounds with short black hair walking down the front stairs and  toward the street.

She asked what he was doing as he fled the scene, but the man did not respond and walked down the street where he later entered the passenger seat of a yellow cab that drove away soon after.

“She said she didn’t notice a yellow taxi, however there is no details of using it as a getaway,” said a source with the NYPD.

The woman, who said she originally thought it was the second floor neighbors making the noise, said she immediately went back into her home only to find it had been ransacked.

On Friday, February 28, police reported yet another break-in at the corner of 57th and 52nd Avenues. This time an 18-year-old male was home watching television when a black male, approximately 6 ft. wearing a black hoodie and black pants – looking down to hide his face – rang the doorbell.

Soon after, he reported hearing two sets of footsteps from the rear of the home.
He immediately fled to his parent’s bedroom, and locked the door. The intruders fled after hearing he was in the house when they tried to open the bedroom door. No property was stolen, according to police.

And on Friday, February 20, a 76-year-old woman returned to her 74th Street home from a vacation and found the front door had been damaged and jewelry and paperwork was stolen.

“It was wedding band, gold watch and paperwork,” the NYPD source said. “There was also some damage to the front door and items were removed.”
