104th warns of uptick in knifepoint robbery

The 104th Precinct has issued a public service announcement warning residents to take extra caution while walking at night after a surge in knifepoint attacks.

“There have been multiple robberies that have occurred over the last 24 hours in the confines of the 104th Precinct (mostly in the Ridgewood community),” said Detective Thomas Bell in an email.

Police describe the perpetrators as two males who are either White or Hispanic. One of the males, police said, is about 5 feet 4 inches, and the other is about 6 feet tall.

“Please be advised these guys are armed with what has been described as kitchen knives,” Bell said. “They have followed their victims down the street and they may or may not be wearing something to obstruct or cover their faces.”

As of Tuesday, Feb. 25, the 104th reports seven such attacks, six of which took place between Feb. 17 and Feb. 24, with three attacks on Feb. 24 alone.

The first attack to fit this M.O. took place on Jan. 22 at 59-12 68 Avenue. Other attacks include a Feb. 17 attack at the intersection 60Lane & 75 Ave. The next attack at the intersection of Putnam Ave. & 60 Pl. on Feb. 21 and a Feb. 23 attack opposite 59-50 Decatur St. The three Feb. 24 attacks took place at 1708 Summerfield Street, at the intersection of Cypress Ave. and Summerfield St., and at the intersection of Grove St. Forest Ave.

“They have targeted mostly women between the hours of midnight and 3 p.m. and midnight,” Bell said.

The good news, if it can be so labeled, is that no one has been reported injured in these knifepoint attacks.
