Vietnam Veterans Memorial opens on Friday

After decades of advocating, funding and construction, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Queens is finally here.

On Friday, 10 a.m. at Elmhurst Park, at the corner of Grand Avenue and 79th Street, Borough President Melinda Katz will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The multi-million dollar memorial will feature the names of service members from Queens who died during the war. Another plaque pays tribute to those who passed away from war-related illnesses.

Friday is expected to be a momentous occasion for Queens veterans, including Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 32, which has pushed for this memorial for years.

If the groundbreaking event was any indication, the turnout will be tremendous. But attendees should bundle up because Friday’s temperatures go up to a high of only 32 degrees, and the event is outdoors.
