Man stabbed over a parking spot in Maspeth

Update 10/31/14: The 55-year-old man who was stabbed over a parking spot outside a Maspeth bingo hall says he was trying take the spot, not hold it. Francisco Colon shared his version of events following his release from Elmhurst Hospital, where he received stitches to his head and hand. Read more here.

Update 10/30/14: Heriberto Zepata, 55, who fled the scene, has been arrested by members of the 104th Precinct Detective Squad in connection with this incident.

A 55-year-old East New York man was stabbed this morning while holding a parking spot for  a friend at the Maspeth Bingo, located at 69th Place and Grand Avenue.

Sylvia Colon said her brother Francisco Colon, a regular at the Maspeth senior hangout, was holding the spot for a friend out front when he got into an altercation with another driver over the free spot on 69th Place, just across the street.

“My brother came into the parking spot, and that doesn’t belong to anybody,” Sylvia said, defending her brother. She added that the man, “got mad and started fighting with my brother.”

“He’s in Elmhurst Hospital and he got stitches,” she said, adding that he is currently recovering and is expected to be released this afternoon.

One officer on the scene confirmed that the knife “slashing” took place and that police are currently looking for the assailant.
