The State Liquor Authority (SLA) denied the Knockdown Center and applicant DMI Inc. a 600-patron liquor license application during a full board hearing yesterday.

The decision to refuse the cabaret license, which came just days before a scheduled performance by Sri Lankan pop-star M.I.A. on May 8 and 9, was due to a lack of public transportation surrounding the site and community opposition.

“This is a vital step in preserving residents’ quality of life and maintaining the needed level of neighborhood safety,” said State Senator Joseph Addabbo in a statement following the verdict. “I will continue to fight to keep our homes and streets a safe haven when it comes to the Knockdown Center, as well as any other establishment threatening our way of life.”

DMI Inc. representative Terrence Flynn argued at the SLA public hearing last week that the site, located at 52-19 Flushing Ave., offered patrons a shuttle service as well as nearly 960 total parking spaces – 50 of which are on site – in rebuttal to transportation grievances.
