Newtown Creek group gets busy – as cleanup nears

The Newtown Creek Alliance has bee the watchdog for residents of Maspeth and Greenpoint for more than a decade now. They are indeed a catalyst for a change in how the government treats the creek. The creek is home to multiple Combined Sewer Outlets, who dumps fairly raw sewage into the stagnant waterway.

Those yellow floats are intended to keep waste from flowing out to the East River.

The DEP has a plan to pump air into the creek from a property in Maspeth it has acquired and the NCA has been watching events at the creek to try to bring back wildlife and the natural waterfront environment.

The Alliance is looking for ‘Citizen Scientists’ to become involved in investigating exactly what wildlife is seen around the creek. Anyone can get involved. Go to:

Newtown Creek Public Education Sessions at the Library…

Beginning March 5th at the Greenpoint Library and at the Maspeth Library on Friday, March 14 at 3:30, the Alliance will have events at a dozen library branches. Answers to questions about sewersheds, watersheds, bioswails and the creek will be given.
