Maspeth Icon Passes Away

Bob Kane, a longtime Maspeth resident who devoted himself to youth baseball, passed away this week. He was 90. Here’s a statement with funeral arrangements from CB5 District Manager Gary Giordano:

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend, Bob Kane.  A lifelong member of the community of Maspeth, and the heart and soul of boys’ Baseball Programs in our community, he passed away on Saturday, October 23rd at 9:01 am.

Bob Kane coached boy’s baseball beginning in 1946, was the Parish Athletic Director for Our Lady of Hope for over 25 years, and for several decades, into his 90’s continued his role as President of the Queens Junior Baseball Alliance (under the Greater NY Sandlot Athletic Alliance).  As recently as July, he was honored by the Greater New York Sandlot Athletic Alliance for 60+ years of service to the youth of Queens through baseball. His name is on a plaque in MCU Field – Brooklyn Cyclones Stadium.  A long time member of the Kiwanis Club of Maspeth, he served as President for two terms.
