Citing the need for fewer turns, fewer bus miles and better, more direct connections to subways, the MTA and DOT have unveiled a plan with longer distances between stops and what they claim to be ‘straighter paths’ along what appears to be busier streets. The plan is being scoured by Community Boards. Community Board #5 meets on Wednesday evening at 7:30 @ Christ The King HS.
At a meeting in borough hall (The Queens Ledger’s Sara Krevoy wrote a more detailed story here) last week, the MTA used the Q58 as an example of a significant change. “All routes will be scrapped and new (number) routes will replace them,” they said….
Although the new bus route through Maspeth is proposed to remain on Grand Avenue, it will be two bus lines, splitting at Queens Blvd., one turning left and squirreling through Elmhurst and Corona towards The Hall of Science. The other would make a right on Queens Blvd. through Rego Park following the LIE to College Point Blvd. Both routes would end at the Main Street 7 train.
The plan for all the local routes will be examined over the next few months at Community Board Committee meetings.
