Car engulfed in flames on LIE service road

Maspeth Car Fire _smallerIf you drove down the Long Island Expressway (LIE) toward Manhattan yesterday afternoon, chances are you saw billowing black smoke emerge from the side.

That’s because a car was set ablaze along the LIE service road yesterday around 1 p.m.

Firefighters responded to the scene and hosed down the car. Witnesses say the driver pulled up on the road after smelling smoke and hearing a “pop.”

He quickly grabbed his child, wallet and laptop and left the car, which was soon engulfed in flames. Witnesses called 911 immediately.

Even after it was hosed down, you could smell the smoke blocks away.

Witnesses said the van in front of the car also suffered damage. Its windows shattered and passersby noticed the broken glass on the floor.

Thankfully, no one was injured, according to witnesses.
