One of the most central and well-known locations in Maspeth is Tranquility Hair Salon. Whether you are getting your hair done for your wedding or getting your daughter’s hair done for her communion, so many residents of the Maspeth community have had countless personal memories with Betty Medina and her staff at Tranquility Hair Salon.
Medina reflected on her 25 years of service to the community, as well as her 10 years of service at Tranquility Hair Salon.
Medina is an active member of the Maspeth community. From working closely with local schools such as the School of Heroes, St. Stanislaus Kostka School, and Martin Luther School where she formerly graduated from.
“It went by fast,” she explained. “It was part of my passion that I wanted to do, so it doesn’t feel like I’ve been doing this for 25 years. I could do it for 25 more.”
Medina is a community aid and role model to not only her son, but to her clients and all of the Maspeth community too. She’s a business owner and a mother who cares about the people living in the neighborhood. She attends events at St. Stan’s, where her son is a student, and tried to get involved with school functions.
She also sponsors the Community of Maspeth and Elmhurst Together (COMET), a not-for-profit civic association organization that has been running since 1994.
Being a hairstylist does not come without its fair share of challenges. Medina explained that in the changing world we live in, keeping up with all the new hair trends is very difficult. She also talked about how it is even harder trying to figure out if these new trends will work on one person and won’t work on another. However, she constantly spoke about her unconditional love for both her clients and staff.
“I love my clients. I’ve had the same clients for years,” she said. “My staff is my family. This is my second home. I actually think I spend more time here than at my actual house.”
Medina is dedicated to her profession while keeping consistent clients throughout these years. She further explained, “Generations change. I have all types of clients. I have young ones, middle aged, older, everyone, everyone!”
The many different people of Maspeth who continually walk in and out of her salon only confirmed Medina’s statements.
When asked why Tranquility Hair Salon was so important to the Maspeth community and its residents, she concluded with, “We’re not just a workplace that’s like ‘okay, get your haircut and get out, goodbye,’ you know. We keep a small staff, we keep it simple.”
“We keep our prices very, very affordable because we have to go with the area that we are in,” Medina added. “Everybody knows me, we have a reliable staff. We’re responsible and we want our clients to be 100% happy, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.”
Tranquility hair salon has continued to flourish throughout these past 25 years, and it is only growing more and more every day.
