There has been plenty of community outrage after the Department of Transportation (DOT) converted 70th Street into a one-way last weekend.

For Maspeth resident Ann Marie McGee, it’s a recipe for disaster.

“There’s going to be a major accident,” she said. “They screwed us here big time.”

McGee is particularly fearful for the safety of her children and grandchildren. She said now, drivers have no choice other than 69th Street, which is already an incredibly busy thoroughfare.

The other day, she saw two vans coming down the street, and they couldn’t fit. One van had to go off the street while the other passed by.

“This is bad. It’s a matter of time,” McGee said. “We need help here and we need it fast.”

The Maspeth resident also identified 52nd Drive as a problematic road, especially now that 70th Street has been converted. She’s afraid there will be accidents there, too.

“We have issues with 52nd Drive,” she said. “They can’t just change one street and not do anything about the others.”

She wants the DOT to “figure out” 52nd Drive before it’s too late.

“This is about safety for all,” McGee said.
