Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley penned a letter to Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Commissioner Kathryn Garcia asking her to prioritize Community Board 5 in the city’s new cleanup initiative – CleanNYC.
Crowley pointed to five busy commercial corridors in her district, including Grand Avenue, that are in need of trash pickup and street maintenance.
She noted that last year, waste baskets along those five streets were reduced to curb illegal dumping. However, that just exacerbated the situation.
“This pile up of garbage affects the quality of life for the countless number of people, both residents and visitors, traveling these streets,” Crowley said. “Not only is foot traffic heavy on these corridors, they are also transportation hubs. Several bus lines stop along these streets, as well as passengers from the M train. Additional trash pickups are desperately needed.”
Crowley has already allocated $140,000 to the Doe Fund to help clean up these areas. She also asked for prioritization to Myrtle Avenue in Ridgewood, Myrtle Avenue in Glendale, Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood and Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village.
When I called Ms. Crowley\’s office saying that over 8 waste receptacles had been removed (at that time) from Grand Ave. & the litter problem had worsened, I was told by her assistant that NOTHING CAN BE DONE. I have to walk 4 blocks out of my way to throw something into a can that may not be there the next time I look. I only vote for people who tell me they can at least TRY to get something done.
