After going missing last September from a Maspeth storage facility located at 58-60 Grand Ave., a Norman Rockwell painting, entitled “Sport,” has been recovered by a private investigator, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The painting was being stored at WelPak, a storage facility offering specialty storage, shipping and installation services for fine art dealers, museums and collectors, according to the company website.
Police report that the painting, which has been featured as the cover image on The Saturday Evening Post’s April 29, 1939 issue, was being stored at WelPak after being sold to a private collector in Birmingham, Ala. at a Sotheby’s auction for more than $1 million.
Jean Gardner, a lawyer for WelPak, told WSJ that the painting had been recovered in Ohio by a private investigator hired by her client. The painting was undamaged, and in the same packing materials it had been stored in at WelPak. No charges have been filed.
